Baylor College of Dentistry inducts two to Hall of Fame

Baylor College of Dentistry bestowed its 2002 Hall of Fame awards in May to two individuals: Dr. Phillip M. Campbell of Huntsville, Texas, and Dr. Laurette Lipson of Dallas.
The Hall of Fame Award, BCD’s highest honor, recognizes individuals who have contributed distinguished service to the college and/or the dental profession. This award is not limited to BCD alumni or members of the dental profession. Since March 1981, BCD has bestowed the Hall of Fame honor on 29 individuals; their portraits are displayed in the Hall of Fame Gallery in the Richard E. Bradley Continuing Education Center on the 6th floor of BCD.
Campbell earned his dental degree in 1971 and his master’s degree in orthodontics in 1973, both from Baylor College of Dentistry. Since the mid-1980s, he has worked tirelessly on behalf of his alma mater. His first contribution was his monumental help in establishing the Robert E. Gaylord Endowed Chair in Orthodontics, the first endowed chair at BCD.
Campbell next turned his attention toward the political process, recognizing that financial support from the state was imperative to the college’s future. He proved a stalwart advocate for BCD in biennial legislative sessions throughout the early 1990s. He gave unselfishly of his time to garner political support for the college’s interests, which eventually included the merger between BCD and The Texas A&M University System in 1995.
Following the merger, Campbell lent his political clout to forging a 10-year legal agreement that retains the name Baylor College of Dentistry to the year 2007. He also immediately became a member of the expanded board of directors of the Baylor Oral Health Foundation and a founding member of the dental advisory committee to the A&M System Health Science Center president.
“Dr. Campbell’s support has enabled the College to reach significant milestones,” said Dr. James S. Cole, BCD dean. “His unwavering commitment has left an indelible mark and is deeply appreciated.”
Campbell was honored with BCD’s Distinguished Alumni Award in 1993 and the Graduate Orthodontic Department Distinguished Alumnus Award in 1996.
Lipson was recruited in 1981 by former BCD dean Dr. Richard E. Bradley to join the Baylor College of Dentistry administration as professor and chair of educational services. She completed a master’s degree in nursing education with an emphasis in administration at the University of Pittsburgh. She also completed a special assignment at the National Library of Medicine in Bethesda, Md., and served as an associate professor at the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Dentistry at Lincoln.
Lipson remained on the BCD campus for more than a decade. In 1990, she was asked to serve as acting associate dean for academic planning and development, a position she held until her retirement in 1992. She has since served the administration of the college as executive educational specialist/consultant, primarily regarding strategic planning and outcomes assessment. Her invaluable experience and exceptional organizational skills are responsible for successfully preparing the college for two stellar accreditation site visits in the past five years.
“Dr. Lipson has been a bulwark of strength during periods of transition,” said Cole. “She is a devoted colleague to the faculty and administration, a counselor and adviser to students and a friend to all. She has provided the college and HSC welcome and thoughtful insight on issues of great significance.”
Lipson became associate dean emeritus on March 26, 1993, and received an honorary dental degree on June 4, 1993.
Baylor College of Dentistry, a component of The Texas A&M University System Health Science Center, is a nationally recognized center for oral health sciences education, research, specialized patient care and continuing dental education. The A&M System HSC serves the state as a distributed, statewide health science center that is present in communities throughout Texas.
