Career Day prepares nursing students for future

The critical need for highly qualified nurses in Texas was clear as many area health care facilities and agencies attended the annual Texas A&M Health Science Center (TAMHSC) College of Nursing Career Day on Jan. 11.

The annual event provides students an opportunity to interact with recruiters in the morning and utilize career preparation sessions in the afternoon.

“Career Day is a great way to begin the spring semester for our graduating students,” said Kathryn Cochran, M.S.N., RN, TAMHSC-College of Nursing associate dean for student affairs.  “By bringing in nurse recruiters from several different areas of the state with varying types of nursing positions, the students are able to get a glimpse of the interview process and broaden their job search.”

In the afternoon sessions, faculty members taught skills in resume and cover letter writing, as well as interviewing techniques. Former TAMHSC-College of Nursing students also held a question and answer session for current students.

“I am confident that nurse recruiters found a wealth of bright, dedicated nursing leaders ready to fill jobs and provide exceptional health care to those in need,” Cochran said.

Participating hospitals and agencies included St. Joseph Regional Health Center in Bryan, College Station Medical Center (The Med), Seton Medical Center Williamson in Round Rock, Bluebonnet Trails Community Services in Round Rock, Scott & White Hospital in Temple and Bryan, Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center in Waco, and the Navy Officer and U.S. Army Programs.
