COP recipient of Project CHANCE award

(KINGSVILLE, TX) — The Texas A&M Health Science Center Irma Lerma Rangel College of Pharmacy Academy of Student Pharmacists chapter has been selected as a 2010 recipient of the American Pharmacists Association-Academy of Student Pharmacists (APhA-ASP) Project CHANCE Award.

APhA-ASP, in collaboration with the Pharmacy Services Support Center of the Health Resources and Services Administration awards program, entitled Chapters Helping Advocate for Needy Communities Everywhere (Project CHANCE), encourages student pharmacists to develop a community outreach project that will be significant to a 340-B eligible community health center or clinic and its patients.

Student pharmacists at the HSC-Rangel College of Pharmacy developed and submitted a Health Education and Literacy in Practice (HELP) proposal, a project designed to serve a community health center at Su Clinica Familiar in Harlingen, Texas. Fourth-year pharmacy student and project leader Dave Kanwar mentions that the chapter’s goal was to not only develop a project for the CHANCE program, but also to create a unifying program, including the experiential experience of our student body and every student organization’s patient care projects.

“We found that the Harlingen clinic’s biggest needs were with patient health literacy, medication and chronic disease education” Kanwar said. “As students, we had also been talking about a program that would enhance the experiential education of our student body and create quality learning opportunities for all of us while serving the needs of our community.”

The award was presented to the HSC-Rangel College of Pharmacy’s American Pharmacists Association Academy of Student Pharmacists chapter (APhA-ASP) during the 2010 APhA meeting in Washington D.C., March 12–15.
