Rossmann to lead periodontics department

(DALLAS) – Dr. Jeffrey A. Rossmann is the new chair of the Department of Periodontics at the Texas A&M Health Science Center Baylor College of Dentistry, effective Jan. 1.

“I’ve always had a passion for teaching, and I’m looking anxiously to regaining that part of my career,” Dr. Rossmann said. “I’m also at the point in my career to contribute to the future of the profession. I want to have an influence in the direction of both periodontics and dental education.”

Dr. Rossmann has been an associate professor of periodontics since 1995. He served as assistant director of the graduate periodontics program until 1999, when he began allocating more time to his private practice. He has served on numerous thesis committees, is a member of the graduate faculty and has provided an externship program in periodontics for HSC-Baylor College of Dentistry students at his private practice since 2000. Under his leadership, 43 residents have passed their board certification examinations to become diplomates of the American Board of Periodontology.

“I believe Dr. Rossmann’s years of experience in academics as well as in the practice of periodontics make him eminently qualified to lead BCD’s periodontics department,” said Dr. James S. Cole, dean of the HSC-Baylor College of Dentistry. “We are fortunate that he has agreed to step into the role of department chair, and I look forward to working with him.”

Prior to joining the HSC-Baylor College of Dentistry faculty, Dr. Rossmann was clinical director of graduate periodontics at the dental branch of The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. He served in the U.S. Army for 20 years, receiving several awards for his military service, including the Legion of Merit for a career of excellence.

Dr. Rossmann is not only certified by the American Board of Periodontology, but he also has been an examiner for the board since 2007. He is a fellow of the American College of Dentists and International College of Dentists and a member of Omicron Kappa Upsilon. He has researched the use of lasers in periodontic treatment and published refereed papers and abstracts on the treatment. He plans to increase his research efforts as department chair.

Dr. Rossmann, who continues to maintain a private practice in Lewisville, received his Bachelor and Doctor of Dental Surgery (D.D.S.) degrees from the University of Minnesota.
