(COLLEGE STATION, TX) — In an effort to more accurately reflect the scope of programs within its graduate school, the Texas A&M Health Science Center (TAMHSC) Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences is being renamed the School of Graduate Studies.

Dr. David S. Carlson

In addition, David S. Carlson, Ph.D., has been named dean of the school. He also is vice president for research at the TAMHSC and interim director of the TAMHSC-Institute of Biosciences and Technology in Houston.

The name change and appointment were approved at the regular meeting of The Texas A&M University System Board of Regents.

“The change in the name to School of Graduate Studies with its own dean will alleviate ambiguity about the scope and importance of graduate programs in the Texas A&M Health Science Center,” Dr. Carlson said.

Since the inception of the Texas A&M Health Science Center in 1999, the name of its graduate school as the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences did not reflect the full range of graduate programs within the institution. In particular, graduate programs in public health and health services research are not typically considered “biomedical sciences.”

The goal of the graduate school is to prepare future faculty and researchers to improve the health of all Texans through scientific discovery and education. The school works closely with the faculty and administrative officers at each of the TAMHSC academic units and centers to facilitate, coordinate, and support research and training initiatives within the TAMHSC as well as between the health science center and other academic, clinical, private, and community-based health and research institutions.

The school offers master’s and doctoral programs in biomedical, clinical and public health sciences through the College of Medicine, School of Rural Public Health, Institute of Biosciences and Technology, and Baylor College of Dentistry.

Update: As of November 5, 2010 the web address of the school has also been updated to reflect the name change, https://sgs.tamhsc.edu the old web address will continue to work, but please update your links and bookmarks to reflect this change.
