BCD Dr. Woody named distinguished alumnus at Marquette University

(DALLAS) — Dr. Ron Woody, director and professor of implant dentistry at the Texas A&M Health Science Center Baylor College of Dentistry, recently received the Distinguished Alumnus in Dentistry Award from the Marquette University School of Dentistry.

A 1963 graduate, Dr. Woody accepted the award April 27 in Milwaukee at the dental school’s awards dinner.

“It is a most humbling and rewarding experience to be recognized by the university, which provided the foundation for my accomplishments over the past 48 years,” Dr. Woody said.

The distinguished alumnus award recognizes a Marquette University dental graduate who has shown extraordinary lifetime professional achievement in the areas of dental education, dental research or community service at a local, state, national and international level. This award honors a dentist who has exemplified the leadership and mentorship that reflects greatly on the dental profession and Marquette University School of Dentistry.

After graduating from dental school, Dr. Woody completed an internship and graduate studies in oral biology, a residency in fixed prosthodontics and a postdoctoral fellowship in biomaterials research in the U.S. Army Dental Corps.

During his 21 years in the Army, Dr. Woody held a number of important military and academic appointments and was awarded several military honors and medals. He received the “A” Specialty Designator awarded by the Surgeon General – the highest professional award with the Army Medical Department – and was appointed a consultant to the Surgeon General in fixed prosthodontics.

For the past 23 years, Dr. Woody has served on the HSC-BCD faculty, where he is a full professor and director of graduate prosthodontics and implant dentistry. He has trained more than 100 residents at the college and in the Army, been a journal editor, published numerous journal articles and abstracts, and presented more than 200 lectures nationally and internationally. He was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Athens in Greece for his worldwide leadership and significant contributions to the advancement of prosthodontics.

Dr. Woody is a diplomate of the American Board of Prosthodontics (ABP) and a fellow of the American College of Prosthodontics (ACP), the American and International College of Dentists, and the International Team of Implantology. He is past president of the ACP, ABP and the American Academy of Fixed Prosthodontics.

Dr. Woody currently serves as a commissioner on the American Dental Association Commission on Dental Accreditation and chairs the ADA Prosthodontic Review Committee. He recently was named the Educator of the Year by the ACP for his overall achievements in academic dentistry and contributions to the health sciences.
