SRPH receives gift from Chevron for environmental health and safety

(COLLEGE STATION, TX) — Chevron, the international energy company, recently gave $65,000 to the Texas A&M Health Science Center School of Rural Public Health for use by its Department of Environmental and Occupational Health.

“We intend to hire a new faculty member to teach courses in environmental health and safety, and to get input from Chevron and other industrial advisors as to additional curricular content that would make SRPH students better employees in the energy industry,” said Kirby Donnelly, Ph.D., department head.

Mark Puckett, president of Chevron’s Energy Technology Company, said: “Knowing how tightly health, safety and the environment are bound to human progress, we are thrilled to make a contribution to Texas A&M’s School of Rural Public Health. The funding we are providing will help to better prepare students for jobs in environmental and occupational health professions, including jobs in the oil and gas industry, as well as help to foster healthy communities and environments.”

During the 10-year anniversary celebration of the HSC-SRPH on April 5, Tom MacDonald of Chevron accepted a Public Health Champion Award in recognition of their commitment to public health.

The Texas A&M Health Science Center provides the state with health education, outreach and research. Its seven colleges located in communities throughout Texas are Baylor College of Dentistry, the College of Medicine, the College of Nursing, the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, the Institute of Biosciences and Technology, the Irma Lerma Rangel College of Pharmacy, and the School of Rural Public Health.
