Public Health Week

The Texas A&M Health Science Center (TAMHSC) School of Rural Public Health will offer an array of events at our campuses in both Bryan-College Station and McAllen during Public Health Week beginning the first week in April. All are welcome to participate in the annual events that support student scholarships and education.

The 8th Annual School of Rural Public Health Golf Tournament will kick off National Public Health Week 2011 on Monday, April 4 at Miramont Country Club. The awards reception and silent auction will conclude the day at 5:00 pm. Information regarding registration and donations can be obtained by contacting SRPH-Golf@srph.tamhsc.edu.

The annual Public Health Week Blood and Bond Marrow Drive in College Station is on Tuesday, April 5, from 11:00 am until 4:00 pm in the SRPH Classroom Building, room C-109.

On Wednesday, April 6, Dr. Robin Fuchs-Young with the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center will present “Determinants of Breast Cancer Outcome Disparities: Local, National and Global Insights.” Please bring your lunch and join us in SRPH Classroom 111 from 12:00 to 1:15 PM.

Students from both our College Station and McAllen campuses will participate in the 6th annual research poster symposium and student poster contest. The research posters will be on display throughout Public Health Week in the SRPH Classroom Building. The top three winners will be announced by Dean Craig Blakely on 4:00 pm, Wed. April 6 and will receive tuition awards.
A nationally renowned panel of health policy experts including J. James Rohack, M.D., immediate past president of the American Medical Association (AMA); Robert Ohsfeld, Ph.D., professor at the School of Rural Public Health and former Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Fellow in Healthcare Finance at Johns Hopkins University and the Texas Medical Center; David C. Warner, Ph.D., professor at the LBJ School of Public Affairs, University of Texas; and Charles Begley, Ph.D., professor and co-director of the Center for Health Services Research at the University of Texas School of Public Health will address the Prenatal Care Clinic on Thursday, April 7 at 11:30 am in SRPH Classroom 109 and discuss how they may leverage themselves in a changing economic environment with healthcare reform on the horizon.

Saturday, April 9, the School will host the annual 5K Fun Run at the SRPH complex on Adriance Road. Information regarding registration can be obtained by contacting adwilson@srph.tamhsc.edu. SRPH Regents Professor Marcia Ory, Ph.D., M.P.H., will also announce the Brazos Valley’s recent national Achievement Award from the Environmental Protection Agency’s Building Health Communities for Active Aging National Recognition Program.

The week will conclude Saturday, April 9 with a gala sponsored by the Rural Public Health Student Association at Pebble Creek Country Club. The evening will be filled with awards, food, music, and dancing. Information regarding ticket sales can be obtained by contacting mattice@srph.tamhsc.edu.

The McAllen campus of the TAMHSC School of Rural Public Health will be hosting a community-wide event on April 6 beginning at 6:00 pm featuring Maria Teresa Cerqueira, M.S., Ph.D., Chief of the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization U.S.-Mexico Border Office speaking on “Chronic Disease, Chronic Effect: The Effect of Chronic Disease on the Border Region.” They will also have a blood drive on Friday, April 8.
