Sharkey receives Hispanic Council Award
Joseph Sharkey, Ph.D., M.P.H., R.D., was awarded on Sept. 12 the Amigo Award from the Hispanic Presidents’ Council at Texas A&M University during celebrations recognizing Hispanic Heritage Month (Sep. 15-Oct. 15). The Amigo Award is given annually to an individual who has made significant contributions to the Latino community.
Dr. Sharkey’s research in South Texas colonia neighborhoods addresses the social, economic, and cultural determinants that impact food choice, access to healthy foods, and overall health. In addition, his research team coordinates two service activities annually: a summer “back-to-school” drive and a Christmas gift drive that benefit underprivileged children and families in the colonias.
