SRPH announces winners of National Public Health Week poster contest

In honor of National Public Health Week, Texas A&M Health Science Center (TAMHSC) School of Rural Public Health students participated in the seventh annual Research Poster Symposium and Student Poster Contest.

Tying for first place were Courtney Nalty, “Using Multilevel Modeling to Compare Food Security Changes Over Time and Seasons Among Mother Child Dyads Living in South Texas Colonias” (co-authors: Jean Brender, Ph.D.; Joseph Sharkey, Ph.D.; John C. Huber Jr. Ph.D.; Wesley Dean, Ph.D.), and Mayura Shinde, M.P.H., and Ann Vuong, M.P.H., “Prenatal Exposure to Nitrosatable Drugs, Vitamin C, and Risk of Selected Birth Defects” (co-authors: Jean Brender, Ph.D.; Martha Werler, Ph.D.; Katherine Kelley, M.P.H.; John C. Huber Jr., Ph.D.; Joseph Sharkey, Ph.D.; Qi Zheng, Ph.D.; Lucina Suarez, Ph.D.; Peter Langlois, Ph.D.; Mark Canfield, Ph.D.; Paul Romitti, Ph.D.; Sadia Malik, M.D., M.P.H.).

Third place was awarded to Deborah Vollmer Dahlke, “Influence of Geography on Texas’s Adolescent and Young Adult (AYA) Cancer Population Mortality” (co-authors: Scott Horel, Marcia Ory, Ph.D.).

Nalty, Shinde and Vuong are in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, while Dahlke is in the Department of Social and Behavioral Health.

Winners have been invited by the Delta Omega Honorary Society in Public Health to submit abstracts for the 15th annual Student Poster Session through the Academic Public Health Caucus during the next American Public Health Association meeting, Oct. 27-31, 2012, in San Francisco
