SRPH inducts newest members into local Alpha Tau chapter of Delta Omega Honorary Society in Public Health

(COLLEGE STATION, TX) — The Texas A&M Health Science Center (TAMHSC) School of Rural Public Health inducted an honorary member, faculty member, nine students and nine alumni into the local Alpha Tau chapter of the Delta Omega Honorary Society in Public Health at a luncheon in their honor May 4 at Veritas Wine and Bistro.

The Delta Omega Honorary Society in Public Health was founded in 1924 at Johns Hopkins University School of Public Health as the honorary society for graduate studies in public health. Honorary members are those possessing exceptional qualifications and having attained meritorious national or international distinction in the field of public health.

Faculty members are nominated for outstanding performance in teaching and research, while students are chosen for scholarly performance and dedication to the advancement of the health of all people. Alumni are nominated for actively engaging in public health work.

“Membership in Delta Omega is intended not only to recognize merit, but also to encourage further excellence in and devotion to public health work,” said Joseph R. Sharkey, Ph.D., M.P.H., RD, professor and director of the Program for Research in Nutrition and Health Disparities at the TAMHSC-School of Rural Public Health and Alpha Tau chapter chair.

The honorary inductee and luncheon guest speaker was Scott Schams, M.D., assistant clinical professor of pediatrics at the Baylor College of Medicine and the TAMHSC-College of Medicine as well as a physician/partner in University Pediatrics Association. Faculty member Jane Bolin, J.D., Ph.D., B.S.N., was inducted along with the following students: Courtney Nalty, Kempapura Murthy, James Stafford, Janice Jackson, Aldo Martinez, Chidiebere Opara, Tricia VanCleef, Gabriela Arandia and Jason Schweitzer.

Alumni inductees included Tyler Whittington, Jennifer Ojaiku, Jase Perry, Heather Clark, Jessica Johnson, Maggie Coufal, Stephanie McDougal, Oseni Abiri and Kenneth Stupka.
