Student Awarded International Grant

Bernard Appiah, M.S., a doctoral student at the Texas A&M Health Science Center School of Rural Public Health, has been awarded an International Engagement Grant to promote health reporting in Ghana from the Wellcome Trust in the United Kingdom.

Originally from Ghana, Appiah will serve as a science communication trainer in his home country to better equip health professionals and journalists to promote health through reporting.

In addition, Appiah recently was appointed an associate fellow of the Communication Research Institute in Australia, which awards fellowships based on recommendations of the institute’s Board of Governors and Council of Fellows. Criteria for fellowships include being able to make a significant contribution to the field of communication practice or research and a commitment to improving the quality of communication for the common good.

And, Appiah has been accepted into the fellow program of the Center for the Integration of Research, Teaching and Learning (CIRTL) Teaching as Research (TAR) program at Texas A&M University. This fall, he will begin investigating the use of blogs in teaching a science writing course for undergraduate biomedical science students at Texas A&M.
