SRPH Trains South Texas Health Workers

The Texas A&M Health Science Center (HSC) School of Rural Public Health McAllen Campus and the McAllen Asthma Coalition (MAC) recently partnered with the Texas A&M University Center for Housing and Urban Development colonias program (CHUD) to offer asthma certified continuing education training for South Texas community health workers (promotores).

Carmen Sumaya, M.P.H., recently trained 27 promotores using the curriculum at the CHUD offices in Weslaco, Texas.

“The colonias program recently received approval from the Texas Department of State Health Services to provide certified continuing education credit hours for promotores utilizing the Asthma and Healthy Homes (El Asma y Como Mantener una Casa Saludable) curriculum developed by Dr. Genny Carrillo Zuniga,” said Laura Trevino, CHUD associate director.

Dr. Carrillo Zuniga, M.D., Sc.D., M.S.P.H., is an assistant professor at the HSC-School of Rural Public Health and leads the MAC, a community-based strategic alliance of Rio Grande Valley stakeholders interested in improving the quality of life of those affected with asthma. MAC is funded in part by the Department of State Health Services.
