Student pharmacists elect Pharmacy Student Council

The leaders for the Pharmacy Student Council were elected today to serve the student body. Javier Saenz, third-year professional student pharmacist, was elected to serve as president of the Pharmacy Student Council. Amanda Kennedy, second-year professional student pharmacist, will serve as vice president. Bryan Donald, second-year professional pharmacy student, will serve as secretary and Mahmoud Sabawi, third-year professional pharmacy student, will serve as treasurer.

The Pharmacy Student Council at the Texas A&M Health Science Center Irma Lerma Rangel College of Pharmacy acts as a resource for communication and a governing body that connects all student organizations with the administration, faculty and staff of the college.

The 2013-2014 Student Council representatives and officers were recently announced. Third-year professional student pharmacists Mahmoud Sabawi and Sammy Khayat and second-year student pharmacist Christopher Espino were elected as Student Members of the Health Science Center Student Government (SGS). Justin Shanks, second-year professional student pharmacist, will be continuing as a student member of the Student Government Association because he was selected to represent the SGA on the Texas A&M University Chancellor’s Student Advisory Council.

Adam Villarreal and Donald Barnhart, second-year professional student pharmacists, were chosen as the Alternate-Student Members of the Health Science Center Student Government Association.

Elected as the Class of 2017 Class Representatives are Chelsea Garcia and Ken Mizuno. Representatives for the Class of 2016 are Bryan Donald and Amanda Kennedy. Representatives for the Class of 2015 are Jennifer Wong and Javier Saenz.

Student members of the Admissions Committee are first-year professional student pharmacist Josue Guerra, second-year professional student pharmacist Ann Margulies-Huffaker and third-year professional student pharmacist Leila Samadi.

First-year professional student pharmacist David Guzman, second-year professional student pharmacist Ashley Floyd and third-year professional student pharmacist Kelsi Gulick were elected as the student members of the Curricular Affairs Committee.

Student members of the Experiential Education Committee are second-year professional student pharmacist Elizabeth Nkwocha and third-year professional student pharmacist Pamela Bosse. Student members of the Outcomes Assessment Committee are second-year professional student pharmacist Evan Cunningham and third-year professional student pharmacist Diane Vo.

The students of the Texas A&M Rangel College of Pharmacy established the Pharmacy Student Council in 2009 in order to maintain student self-government for the students of the College. They also wanted to provide students the opportunity to share their opinions on all matters of interest to students within the College. The student council also helped provide proper communication to fully established and officially recognized professional pharmacy associations or organizations.

The student council has the authority to promote, support and coordinate association or organizational activities, integrate organizational activities, and provide coordination, leadership, and balance to the established associations or organizations. This promotes working relationships among them.

The student council consists of members that come from various organizations—presidents and other offices—one representative from each class of the four classes, and a maximum of two members-at-large appointed by the dean or designate.  The Pharmacy Student Council assists with the pharmacy admissions interview process, makes recommendations to the administration that can assist with improvements within the College, and serve as an advisory group when it comes to educational, professional and extracurricular activities within the College.
