TAMBCD program earns U.S. News and World Report recognition

The Graduate Program in Biomedical Sciences at Texas A&M University Baylor College of Dentistry has been named as one of U.S. News and World Report’s best graduate programs in biological sciences.

Ranked 115 by the report, the program tied with Northeastern University, Temple University and University of Texas at San Antonio for the spot.

“This ranking of our biomedical sciences graduate program is just confirmation of what we have known for a long time: It is an exceptional craniofacial education/research program,” said Dr. Larry Bellinger, associate dean of research and graduate studies at TAMBCD. “I am thankful that the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research and the college have provided the financial support to help make this possible, and I am appreciative of all of the efforts of our faculty, students and alumni.”

The graduate program encompasses a number of college departments including the Department of Biomedical Sciences, which is one of the few “stand-alone” basic science departments in the country located solely within a dental school.  Its faculty teach gross anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, general and oral histology, microbiology, neuroscience and pharmacology to the dental students, dental hygiene students and graduate students.  Besides teaching, the faculty engage in research in several areas having to do with a general focus on craniofacial biology.  The Department is especially well known for its excellence in the area of mineralized tissue research.

“We’ve assembles a growing cadre of very bright researchers,” said Dr. Lawrence Wolinsky, TAMBCD dean. “I am proud of the work the graduate program has done and continues to do as we grow our basic science and translational research programs.”
