Texas A&M Health Science Center prepares for commencement

(COLLEGE STATION, TX) The College of Medicine and the School of Rural Public Health at the Texas A&M Health Science Center will host commencement ceremonies Saturday, May 17, while the HSC-Baylor College of Dentistry in Dallas will have graduation Wednesday, May 14.

HSC-Baylor College of Dentistry graduates will receive degrees at 7 p.m. at the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center in Dallas. The keynote speaker is Robert J. Isaacson, D.D.S., M.S.D., Ph.D., editor of The Angle Orthodontist and former chairman of orthodontics at three U.S. dental schools. Eighty-three D.D.S. candidates will participate, 30 dental hygiene students will receive B.S. degrees, and six graduate students in various specialty certificate programs will be recognized. Six M.S. degrees will be awarded – one M.S. in Biomedical Sciences and five M.S. in Oral Biology.

Meanwhile, students from the HSC-College of Medicine in College Station and Temple, the HSC-Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences in College Station and Houston, and the HSC-School of Rural Public Health in College Station will receive their degrees at two different times Saturday.

Kristine M. Gebbie, Dr.P.H., R.N., Elizabeth Standish Gill Associate Professor of Nursing and director of the Center for Health Policy at Columbia University School of Nursing, will deliver the commencement address for the HSC-SRPH in exercises at 9 a.m. at Rudder Auditorium on the Texas A&M University campus in College Station. Fifty-five students will be honored – 37 M.P.H., 16 M.H.A. and two M.S.P.H. – as the school observes its 10th anniversary.

The HSC-College of Medicine commencement exercise is at 2 p.m., also at Rudder Auditorium. Speaker is Tadataka Yamada, M.D., president of the Global Health Program at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Seventy-six students will receive their M.D. degree, and 11 will receive their Ph.D. (six students) or M.S. (five students) degree through the HSC-GSBS.

Admission to all commencement ceremonies is free and does not require a ticket.

The Texas A&M Health Science Center provides the state with health education, outreach and research. Its seven colleges located in communities throughout Texas are Baylor College of Dentistry, the College of Medicine, the College of Nursing, the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, the Institute of Biosciences and Technology, the Irma Lerma Rangel College of Pharmacy, and the School of Rural Public Health.
