Tips to Eat Healthy on Thanksgiving
Do not worry! It is possible to eat healthfully during the holidays.
Thanksgiving…a day full of family, but also inflated portion sizes and overfilled plates. Matt Hoffman, DNP, clinical assistant professor with the Texas A&M College of Nursing, gives some tips to stay healthy, while still enjoying the holiday.
“The best tips for portion control are starting with the plate size. So make sure you’re getting a smaller plate, and then limiting the number of items you’re putting on that plate,” Hoffman said. “Start off with just three items.”
He also suggests not skipping any meals on Thanksgiving.
“It automatically sets you up for wanting to eat more, overindulging, and there really isn’t a benefit for calorie replacement in terms of saving any calories earlier and then loading up on them later on” Hoffman said.
If you do find yourself starting to feel like the biggest stuffed turkey at Thanksgiving dinner, drink plenty of water and perhaps go on a short walk to burn some calories and encourage digestion.
