Congressman Hinojosa to Visit South Texas Center Tomorrow
Congressman Rubén Hinojosa, representing the 15th District of Texas, will visit The Texas A&M University System Health Science Centers South Texas Center at 701 East Vermont Street in McAllen tomorrow, Tuesday, March 2, 2004, from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m.
The U.S. Representative, who currently represents all or part of 12 Texas counties from the Rio Grande Valley north to part of Bastrop and Fayette counties, will hear an overview of the work of the South Texas Center from Nancy W. Dickey, M.D., president of the A&M Health Science Center and vice chancellor for health affairs for the A&M System, and Elvin Smith, Ph.D., executive vice president of the A&M Health Science Center and director of the South Texas Center. Also on hand to provide an overview of the A&M Health Science Center School of Rural Public Health (SRPH)s programs at the South Texas Center will be Ciro V. Sumaya, M.D., M.P.H.T.M., dean of the SRPH.

The mission of the South Texas Center is to provide support for health professions education; recruit students into the health professions for McAllen and surrounding counties; provide health outreach programs to disadvantaged populations in the region; and conduct research on health issues specific to the Lower Rio Grande Valley.
Congressman Hinojosa, who is a strong advocate in Congress for education, housing and economic development in his district, is very interested in the work of the Center.
The Texas A&M University System Health Science Center provides the state with health education, outreach and research. Its five components located in communities throughout Texas are Baylor College of Dentistry, the College of Medicine, the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, the Institute of Biosciences and Technology and the School of Rural Public Health.
